TLC takes Acapella Gospel Music To Japan

August 2001 saw T. Coats, president of TLC Productions, and the rest of the Acapella group, the Coats Singers in Japan for a concert tour.

Hosted by a local congregation of the
    church of Christ in Japan
, the Coats Singers, all family members, were there on behalf of the Junior Chamber of Commerce.

How was acapella gospel music received in Japan? "The reception was great!" said T. Coats, TLC President, "the interest in Japan and in Europe for this kind of music is higher than it is here in the U.S.".

All the Coats Singers had to do was to sing,(and to sample Kobe beef and other delicacies) as they were shepherded from one venue to another by their hosts during the two week stay.

"Although they don't always understand the words, It seems as though our Japanese audience was trying to get closer to their own spirituality--the music is something new to them--and they responded enthustiastically. I'd like to go back." said Mr. Coats.

All the cd's and tapes and t-shirts and other items that the Coats Singers brought with them to Japan very quickly disappeared as they were eagerly purchased by their Japanese fans. "Other countries really appreciate Gospel music. Like Jazz, and Country music, they are uniquely American inventions," said Coats.
